Cloaked in a skittering, snare-laden shadow, Ancient Downer has channeled a weird Lovecraftian breakcore motif out of clouds of old funk, jazz and synthesizer dust. Unending breakbeat patterns drive the gray rhythmic core of these tracks, not so subtly accompanied by thudding 808 sub-bass riffs. In particular, ‘Jdream’ imagines an almost emo breakcore vibe, looping a sad guitar riff as the Boys Hotel armory of breaks and 808s unloads overtop.
